How To Prevent Damage To Solar Panels

Though solar panels are built to withstand lots of punishment, they do have one enemy. That enemy would be water. Should water be able to penetrate the cells, damage can occur. The manner in which the unit is installed will go a long way in preventing water from causing any serious problems.

The unit should always be installed at a angle, and not horizontally. This will prevent water from pooling on top of the unit, as it will roll of instead. There should also be sufficient space underneath the unit, as this will allow any moisture underneath to quickly dry and not collect in this space. Allowing professionals to install the unit is the best course of action.

Cleaning may also help prevent damage. Cleaning is mostly done to keep the cells working well, but is also the perfect time to conduct an inspection. Never clean the cells with an abrasive detergent or abrasive cleaning rag or brush, as these will scratch the cells.

Though water can pose a problem to solar panels, you will not need to hand dry the panels every time it rains. You will want to inspect the panels periodically to ensure that no moisture is gathering within any of the cells. Those who live in rainy areas may wish to do this more frequently than those who live in drier areas.
